Hawkins served as underwriter’s counsel in connection with the issuance of approximately $50 million of tax-exempt revenue bonds issued by the California Health Facilities Financing Authority on behalf of Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute (“LA BioMed”), a biomedical research institute based in Torrance, California, to finance the construction and equipping of a new bioscience research building and incubator for startup companies. LA BioMed houses more than 400 scientists working on more than 600 research projects, including treatments for debilitating and fatal diseases. The bond financing represented LA BioMed’s first entrance into the public markets in its 66-year existence.
